I get an error message that says "Cannot negotiate a compatible set of protocols"
Try shutting down your computer and then rebooting it.  A lot of times this will solve the problem. If this does not solve the problem then more than likely you need to reinstall you dial-up networking.  To do this go to Start then to Settings and then to Control Panel.  Click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.  Click on the Windows Setup tab at the top.  Uncheck the Communications box and click ok.  Go back into Add/Remove Programs and then to Windows Setup tab and put the check mark back in.   Click O.K.  It will ask you for your Windows95/98 CD and then copy the files needed.  Once your system restarts give the Internet a try.

It tells me there is no dial tone.

This happens most often to folks who have voice mail.  When you have a message waiting the dial tone beeps to tell you that you have messages.  This tone is not recognized by your modem, so therefore it thinks there is no dial tone.  To remedy this problem, simply retrieve your messages and then the dial tone will come back.   If you do not have voice mail then make sure you have the phone lines plugged into the correct sockets on your modem.  If this does not fix the problem then you probably have a modem conflict.

I click on Internet Explorer but it doesn't dial-in.

This problem will usually result in the error message "Unable to find <Web site>. The address may be incorrect." To fix it follow these steps.

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Double-click the connection you use to dial the Internet, and then log on as you normally do. If you do not know which connection to use, then use the right mouse button to click The Internet icon on the desktop, click Properties, and then see which connection is listed in the Dial-Up Networking box (this information is on the Connection tab in Internet Explorer 3.x)
  3. After you start the Dial-Up Networking connection, start Internet Explorer.
  4. Empty the temporary file cache. To do so, click Options on the View menu, click the Advanced tab, click Settings, click Empty Folder, click Yes, click OK, and then click OK again.
  5. Type the Internet address of the Web site you want to use as your Start page in the Address box, and then press the ENTER key. Perform this step even if the site you want to use is already listed in the Address box.
  6. If the address you want to use did not appear in the Address box when you started Internet Explorer, click Options on the View menu, click the Start And Search Pages tab, and then click Use Current (this information is on the Navigation tab in Internet Explorer 3.x).
  7. Quit Internet Explorer and the Dial-Up Networking connection, and then restart Internet Explorer.

When I go to certain web sites, it takes a long time to find them.

There are a number of situations that could cause this problem.  None of which are an Oasis Online problem.  More often than not the problem is congestion at that site.   For instance at 8:00 P.M. the traffic at Yahoo.com is in the millions.  This has a tendency to overload the lines going into Yahoo.  It causes a sort of traffic jam on the Internet.  The other reason that this might occur is that the place you are trying to go to has a slow connection to the Internet.  The third and final reason is that the server/site you are going to is down.

What about viruses on the Internet?

The Internet is not the virus ridden plain that the media would have you to believe.   Although it is possible to get a virus, it's not really probable.  We like to say "it's like E.Coli in beef, you could get it but it's not very likely you will".  However Oasis Online does suggest that you purchase an anti-virus software program just to be safe.

Can I get a virus through email?

For the most part email viruses are hoaxes.  It is possible to receive a virus via email.  However they can only come as an attachment to the email.  Simply reading the email is not dangerous.  When you double click on the attachment is when you will get the virus.  If you receive email from an unknown source and it has an attachment, simply delete it and the virus is dead.

What is FTP and how do I do it?

FTP (short for File Transfer Protocol) is a language used to transfer large files over the Internet.  This is especially true if you want to move your web pages to Oasis Online servers.  There are numerous FTP programs out there.  The one we recommend the most is WS-FTP.

What about Call Waiting?

Call waiting will definitely affect your online experience.  If you have call waiting and do not disable it when you go online when a call comes in it will knock you offline.  To disable call waiting on your computer you must first contact the telephone company and tell them you want to have the ability to disable call waiting.   YOU MUST TELL THE PHONE COMPANY.  Then go to Start-Setting-Control Panel-Modems-Dialing Properties.  Towards the bottom it will say to disable call waiting dial...enter *70 in the box and make sure that option is checked.  That's all there is to it.

I can get to Oasis Online but can't get anywhere else.

If this occurs, then the upstream provider is more than likely offline.  One of the features we offer you is to check the status of our network.  The Oasis Online network is checked for up status every 60 seconds.  If anything is offline the network administrator is paged immediately.  By going to http://whatsup.oasisol.com:81 you can check the status of Oasis Online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  When you are asked for username just type in guest and no password.  This will show you the status page.

I have a 56K modem but I'm not connecting at that speed.

Once again there are numerous factors to getting the 56K speed.  If you are getting any speed above 33.6K then it is probably the phone lines that are slowing you down.  If you can't get any speeds above 33.6K then you probably need to upgrade to v.90 technology, and you will get faster speeds.  For more information consult your modem manufacturers web site.  Below is a list of some common modem vendors.
